OUR MISSION

Ever fallen head over heels over the perfect pair of biker shorts? But were unable to find out where they were made? With what? How? So have we ! And we’ve had to pass up that perfect pair of biker shorts or jeans or any other fashion crush because of it.

That is why honesty and transparency matter to us, as much as they matter to you. Limited quantities and quality materials. The future is slow fashion & zazamona is part of that future today.

All our biker shorts are made from the same material: 95% GOTS and BCI certified organic cotton and 5% elastane. Our cotton originates from India.

GOTS or Global Organic Textile Standard is a worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres. This ensures the material follows a specific set of ecological and social criteria in all processing stages of the supply chain. The cotton’s cultivation stage is under the scope of governments’ national organic farming standards.

This ecological and social criteria includes among others: the separation and identification of organic fibres, environment management like wastewater treatment, the prohibition of environmentally hazardous substances, and the respect of key norms determined by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) and Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

You can read more about the Global Organic Textile Standard certification criteria here:
https://global-standard.org/the-standard/gots-key-features

We cannot certify that our end product, our biker shorts, is GOTS certified because our material includes 5% elastane. This elastane allows the material to have that elastic feel that adapts to your body.

BCI or Better Cotton Initiative is the world’s largest cotton sustainability programme. Its goal is to support farmers through training and learning opportunities about practices that can make their cotton production more sustainable (environmentally, socially and economically) and that decent work conditions are met. BCI applies solely to the cotton’s cultivation stage (farming) and not the cotton supply chain, which is why the GOTS certificate allows us to understand what happens next to our cotton.

We are working very hard with our partners to move towards a material made from recycled cotton and recycled elastane. For now, this means some additional testing on the durability and softness of the material as recycled cotton results in lower quality and more transparency when worn. Our hope is that zazamona biker shorts will become a beloved part of your wardrobe essentials. For us, this means making sure they will last a lifetime (and become hand-me downs for the next generation).

As the supply chain of our biker shorts includes different parties along the way, the entire process requires more time and patience to get to where we want to be. Recycled materials are still finding their place in the fashion industry and are not used as often as conventional/virgin materials, making it more difficult to source, especially for smaller businesses. Along with our partners, we are also doing our best to maximise the traceability of our goodies and to ensure that specific ethical and environmental standards are respected throughout our shorts’ journey to you.

Our care and slogan labels, sewn to the shorts, are made from 100% organic cotton.

At zazamona, we are very proud to partner with a family-owned business that has seen consistent growth over their 25 years of experience in the textile industry. Their factory is situated in the North of Portugal – a region known for its textile industrial heritage and a country that follows European laws and policies regarding labour relations practices. Our partner is committed to investing in innovative methods and a range of fabrics to reduce waste and optimise energy where possible. They are OEKO-TEX and ISO 9001:2015 certified.

Sourcing their fabrics within a radius of 35km, our partner manufactures all their garments at their factory to optimise their production whilst minimising their carbon footprint.

Your zazamona shorts are packed in a 100% compostable mailer that can be composted both at home and commercially. They are made from a combination of PBAT, a compostable bio-based polymer and PLA, which consists of renewable raw materials and is biodegradable. Please check your country’s local regulations to compost this mailer commercially.

You will notice your biker shorts are wrapped in our customised tissue paper sealed with our sticker. This is added protection for your shorts against any type of external hazards. Both our customised wrapping paper and stickers are FSC certified.

• FSC Certified
The FSC or Forest Stewardship Council certifies that the paper products that make up our printed tissue paper and stickers are sourced from a forest and supply chain that are managed responsibly and sustainably. FSC forest management standards are developed at an international level, and are then adapted to individual countries’ legal, social, and geographical settings, through national standards.

• Acid Free Paper
Our personalised tissue is made from cellulose fiber where the active acid pulp is eliminated during processing. It is also lignin- and sulfur-free, meaning that our ink won’t transfer from the tissue and the paper won’t leave behind any of these chemicals when decomposing.

• Soy-based Inks
Soy inks are an eco-friendly alternative to petroleum-based inks and are made from soybeans, a renewable resource. While soy inks are slower to dry than many inks, the process produces more vibrant colours as well as having the added benefit of not leaving behind petroleum-based products when decomposing. Finally, soy inks have low levels of VOCs, reducing air pollution during the drying process.

• Our seed paper hang tags
Not only do our hang tags look and feel amazing, but they are also embedded with flower or herb seeds! Once you receive your zazamona order, just pop the hang tag into a pot of soil, let your seeds grow and your paper compost away. No waste gang! Our supplier usually supplies us with parsley-embedded seed paper but it can vary according to stock. Let our hang tags surprise ya!

For larger orders, please note that our compostable mailers will not be used. In this case, your order will be delivered in a fully recycled cardboard box provided by the Swiss Post.
